JOURNEYS TO SCHOOL

An unprecedented photo report dedicated to children around the world

  • Higashimatsushima, Japan

On 11 March 2011, the Japanese coast of Tohoku was hit by a powerful tsunami in Higashimatsushima which, like Fukushima, is in the Sendai area. Most of the city was destroyed, including schools. Traces of the disaster are still visible today, and many children are living in temporary housing. Two years later, the route to school taken by children in the Ono district is still marked by the disaster.
